Intel vs AMD: which chipmaker does better job?


Finding the best processor for your needs is a straightforward process once you determine which brand suits you best: are you an AMD or an Intel junkie? The answer isn’t quite as simple as whether your prefer the colour red or blue.

Like the war waging in the graphics cards space between Nvidia and AMD, the CPU market oversees the rivalry of AMD vs Intel. 

Despite biased hearsay, each company’s chips have their own advantages and shortcomings. For example, while AMD’s chips typically boast more cores, the cores that Intel’s CPUs do have are made faster by Hyper-threading.

With AMD having gained an edge thanks to Ryzen, let’s look at how its processors stack up against Intel’s Kaby Lake chips, which power everything from the viciously competitive Razer Blade to the flipping fantastic HP Spectre x360 15.

The truth is that both Intel and AMD processors typically retail at about the same price; AMD is only known for being cheaper because its chips aren't nearly as commonplace once you hit that exorbitant $200 mark.

If you want the best of the best performance with little regard for price, then turn your head towards Intel. Not only does the Santa Clara chipmaker rank consistently (albeit only slightly) better in CPU benchmarks, but Intel's processors draw less heat as well, blessing them with lower TDP (thermal design point) ratings across the board.

According to the leaked information it's possible that Windows 10 S is the official name for Microsoft's rumoured Windows 10 Cloud OS that we've been hearing about lately, which seems to be designed to compete with Google's Chrome OS. 
It's not clear what processor and other hardware power the Surface Laptop, but the images show that there will be a regular USB port, mini DisplayPort, and the conventional Surface power connector.

ASUS keeps doing it again and again. The Taiwanese company announced at Computex 2016 the upcoming ASUS ROG Swift PG258Q gaming monitor. The monitor is also commonly referred to as just ASUS ROG PG258Q or just ASUS PG258Q and it is 24.5 inches in size rather than 25 inches.


We also know for a fact that the ASUS PG258Q will feature a Full HD resolution. As an addition, the display will also include a G-SYNC module and therefore supports NVIDIA G-SYNC technology. The panel will be based on the old TN panel technology and will feature 1ms response time for minimal ghosting effects and a low input lag as well. In terms of spec, this monitor is very similar to the ASUS ROG Swift PG248Q.

ASUS has overclocked two Intel i7-7700K Kaby Lake CPU to over 7.3GHz on all four cores and eight threads using their new Maximus XI Apex motherboard. The CPUs were overclocked using liquid Nitrogen and liquid Helium for cooling. 

This event showcases exactly how well Intel's new Kaby Lake series CPUs can overclock, with 5GHz overclocks seeming common on Intel's new Z270 platform. 

It is still very early days for the Kaby Lake overclocking scene, so it is expected that these world-class overclocks will be broken within the next few months, especially as BIOS revisions are released and professional overclockers gain access to custom-made BIOS versions. 
At this ASUS event, the overclockers Fredyama, elmor, slamms, shamino, der8auer, coolice, Raja, Xtreme Addict and Dancop were present, with most of them walking away with new world record overclocks and first place scores on a variety of CPU and gaming benchmarks. 

“If you work constantly with [liquid helium], it lasts 15 minutes,” he said. “That’s quite funny if you calculate it. Liquid helium reacts different from liquid nitrogen because it’s lighter. The nitrogen we put into thermos flasks and fill it into the cooler, which is not working with helium. We have to fill the liquid helium with a lance directly from the original flask into the cooler where it shoots into the cooler and cools it down.”
